“What’s a nice ghoul like you doing in a place like this?”
(Winning caption: “Sure, I’ve got a few minutes to kill.”)

“He gives me the chills.”
(Winning caption: “Don’t worry. He won’t last long.” )

“One, two, three, four, I declare a trade war.”
(Winning caption: “I haven’t seen matching shirts like that
since The Monkees went off the air.”)

Matthew Henry Hall’s amusing cartoon for the November IHE contest includes the text “Used only by permission” in the copyright statement. It depicts a faculty member standing in the doorway of the Admissions office, addressing a crowd of – I assume – prospective students.
“We value diversity, except in ideology. Free thinkers need not apply.”
(Winning caption: “I’m not gonna lie, working up to your potential
isn’t as important as having parents paying up to theirs.”)

“Hey 19, that’s enough of the fine Colombian for now.”
(Winning caption: “OK, Vladimir, we can talk freely up here.”)

“She’s secretly planning to accuse him of inappropriate contact.”
(Winning caption: “I love it when the shirts turn plaid.”)

“The new tax regulations are here.”
(Winning caption: “She left a note. No, I haven’t read it yet.”)

“It’s not a typo. We really do have ducking bad tech support.”
(Winning caption: “I’m afraid this whole experiment is about to go south.”)

The New Yorker initially posted the wrong cartoon for this contest …
“Frankly, my dear …”
My caption should have been: “I really miss Mankoff.”
The cartoonist’s caption: “You have something stuck between your teeth.”
And here is the drawing the New Yorker intended for this contest,
and the caption I would have entered …

“I can change the water but first it has to really want to change.”
(Winning caption: “I can give you the tools, but you have to do the work yourself.”)

“Dramatic foreshadowing. Spears must be about to be invented.”
(Winning caption: “It will be worth even more when he’s extinct.”)

“The dessert list is on the billboard outside.”
(Winning caption: “Can I tell you about a few items that aren’t on the menu?”)
